‘Now the preliminaries are over with,’ began Harold, but was interrupted by Donnie.
‘Didn’t know that,’ replied Donnie and took a deep puff of smoke. He’d have to give it up at some stage. ‘So do you sweat under there?’
Harold looked blank; admittedly this was easy seeing as his face was beneath a black leather mask.
‘Depends on the situation, really.’ replied Harold, as they walked around the building. ‘I have some–’
‘And what’s the point of it?’
They stopped next to a pile of boxes, some of which were ripped open. Their contents had spilled to the concrete in large plastic bags.
‘Well, it’s a bit risque,’ Harold winked at Donnie, which made him look like a demented masked crime-fighter, just without the ears. ‘I have something for you.’
Harold reached into a pocket, looked even more blank, looked up and cursed.
Donnie frowned. No, I just don’t want to know.
He looked up and exhaled cigarette smoke. A very nice ring, very symmetrical, slowly expanded into the West. He frowned, peering through the circle of increasing diameter.
‘It must still be in the studio,’ said Harold, somehow managing to look disappointed.
‘What’s that?’
‘Information,’ said Harold. ‘The location–’
‘What,’ asked Donnie, then corrected. ‘No. That.’
He pointed through the ring. A dot in the sky became three. A thumping sound slowly increased in volume.
‘Helicopters?’ said Harold.
Donnie nodded, a horrible feeling in his stomach that just wasn’t indigestion. He took another puff and dropped the cigarette to the ground, extinguishing it underfoot.
‘They look nasty,’ he commented without irony. ‘Black, is usually slimming, but not on a heavily armed flying machine.’
He looked in another direction and exclaimed ‘Oh! What’s that?’
‘What?’ Harold turned.
