2-14:On the road to nowhere
‘It’s all right,’ Daisy shook her head. ‘I’m just tired.’
‘Weary to the bone by the look. You want an asprin?’
‘No,’ said Daisy, glancing away then back to Prime. ‘Thanks.’
‘We better go meet our guests then.’
Daisy and Prime walked down the neck of the ship and through three doorways and stopped by an airlock door with a round glass window showing the airlock beyond bathed in a red glow. The light changed to green and the outer door opened allowing two people to step inside.
‘Bloody hell,’ said Daisy as the inner door hissed open.
Miss Rook and Colonel Panix stood expectantly there. Prime stepped back and spoke:
‘Come in.’
‘Patricia,’ said Miss Rook almost respectfully, stepping inside and past Prime. She stopped by Daisy and locked eyes.
‘What do you want?’ asked Daisy flatly. She wasn’t in the mood for games and said-so.
‘No games, Daisy,’ said Panix, leaning on his cane; his knee was particularly sore today.
‘No games,’ said Rook. ‘We have things to discuss.’
‘Like what?’
‘We received a message from this ship fourteen hours ago,’ said Rook.
‘No you didn’t,’ said Prime.
‘A duplicate then,’ said Panix. ‘It was a message from Daisy sent by a Colonel Smith.’
‘Shit,’ Daisy hissed without thinking.
