2-14:On the road to nowhere

Miss Rook raised an eyebrow; perhaps this had confirmed a supposition.

‘You’ve got it wrong,’ said Prime, folding her arms. ‘You must have. She’s been with us the whole time.’

‘Parallel worlds, Prime,’ said Panix. ‘There was a Daisy on this world, the same as there was each of us.’

‘What was the message,’ murmured Daisy.

‘You don’t know,’ asked Miss Rook.

Daisy was silent as Panix spoke.

‘“Tell Rook and Panix they need reinforcements. Planet with the mirrors.”’

Well at least he followed-through, thought Daisy. I should thank him.

‘What does that mean,’ asked Prime.

‘Maybe we should ask Daisy,’ said Rook. ‘She’s the one that sent it.’

‘You said she was a duplicate,’ said Prime. ‘How should she know?’

Rook paused, then spoke carefully to Daisy.

‘Do you want to explain it?’

Daisy met her gaze.

‘Explain what?’ asked Prime.

‘Do you,’ asked Rook once again, this time more carefully, perhaps even kindly. It was difficult for Daisy to tell.

Daisy turned on her heel, considering. She stopped by a wall and stared at it for a moment, before turning.

‘It’s time to tell the truth,’ said Panix. ‘We’ve worked it out. It took a lot of effort.’

‘I’ll bet it did,’ said Daisy, more focussed than she’d ever been. Perhaps it was time. She felt the stress falling away from her to be replaced with relief. ‘Perhaps now.’

‘Tell the truth about what?’ asked Prime more forcefully.
