2-14:On the road to nowhere
Ordinarily there wasn’t a lot of point what with living the life she did.
But now she had somewhere to put it: her ship.
‘How much,’ asked Daisy.
The girl looked over to her mother, who replied as her song finished.
‘Ten for the pair.’
Daisy retrieved money and handed it over.
‘Didn’t realise anyone was here,’ she said to the woman, and immediately felt stupid for the question — it revealed she was from the other side of the line.
‘Yeah, that’s what they tell people. Keeps the masses nice and controlled.’ said the woman, her eyes down on the guitar as she strummed. ‘Life goes on, you know?’
Daisy nodded.
‘Why are you here?’ the woman asked, holding Daisy’s gaze with hard grey eyes.
There’s a good question, thought Daisy, opting for honesty in her response.
‘I brought someone home.’
‘We saw helicopters yesterday,’ said the girl. ‘Usually people get taken when that happens.’
‘Sally, go find your Uncle Baz, okay.’
The girl ran off.
‘Did you come with them?’ the woman asked. ‘With the Major?’
‘It’s complicated,’ said Daisy by way of explanation.
‘I find “yes” or “no” usually answers a question like that.’ The woman was blunt, and understandably so.
‘I came with them, to find an old friend of mine.’
‘Did you find her?’
Daisy nodded.
