2-14:On the road to nowhere

Blood ran down her face, and one side of her head was stinging with pain. She gasped as she coughed; Broken ribs? Possibly.

The air began to clear, the air conditioning sucking the smoke from the air, revealing a bare room, with desks to one side and a large screen, cracked but holding – beyond it were stars.

She pushed herself up as best she could and made for the three bodies that lay on the deck, realising she’d jumped without knowing it. Two of the women were strangers, but the third was a nasty surprise.

‘Daisy,’ breathed Miss Rook. ‘You’re here. I’m glad.’

‘Glad? What’s going on?’

God, her head hurt. She tried to focus on Rook’s face but all she got was a slightly out-of focus blur in one eye.

‘Is it you Daisy?’

‘What? Course it is.’

‘No, is it you?’

‘What the fuck is that supposed to mean?’

‘Are you my Daisy?’

The question was unexpected.

‘What?’ Daisy demanded.

‘You’ve changed,’ said Rook in disappointment. ‘I need you back. I need my Daisy.’

Rook coughed and Daisy saw blood leaking from one of her ears.

‘You need help.’

‘Get this message to us,’ said Rook. ‘It’s all I ask.’

‘Message?’ demanded Daisy. ‘What the hell are you–’

‘Tell Panix we needed more reinforcements for the battle.’

Rook grabbed Daisy’s face with both hands.

‘The battle on the world with the mirrors. Tell us both.’

A sudden terrifying bang deafened her and there was sudden silence.
