2-14:On the road to nowhere

‘A standoff is boring for both of us. I’ve got marksmen all around here.’

‘You’re lying.’

Try me.’ he yelled, then calmed down. ‘The longer we talk, the longer they have to get into position. I thought we were friends Daisy.’

He was right, thought Daisy. It was a standoff. Oddly, she realised the stoneware cup was hanging in a bag from her wrist, then remembered the woman and the girl that sold it to her.

‘I won’t take the controller Daisy,’ he said carefully. ‘You get to keep it. I want my people to finish their jobs and then you can go.’

‘No threats?’

‘No threats, they sound stupid in the daylight.’

Daisy began to lower the controller and her chest exploded with pain. Her arms jerked outwards involuntarily and the controller flew from her hand.

Cease fire!’ screamed Smith as Daisy fell. ‘Dammit! Cease fire!’

She blacked-out for a moment, remembering Rook’s words which were suddenly clear in her mind, then felt herself being shaken back to consciousness. Daisy opened her eyes and stared into those of Colonel Smith.

‘Tell them,’ she whispered and began to lose consciousness again just as Smith grabbed her hand and held it tight. ‘Tell Panix and Rook they need reinforcements… planet with the mirrors.’

BZORNT!

She woke with a killer headache and instinctively felt between her legs. There she found orange fabric and then what she was expecting.

Daisy Penfolde opened her eyes and watched the stars on the other side of the reinforced glass barrier. The ship was quiet, lights off, perhaps even dead.
